Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area
Stretching over 72,000 ha in the northern part of Sichuan Province, the jagged Jiuzhaigou valley reaches a height of more than 4,800 m, thus comprising a series of diverse forest ecosystems. Its superb landscapes are particularly interesting for their series of narrow conic karst land forms and spectacular waterfalls. Some 140 bird species also inhabit the valley, as well as a number of endangered plant and animal species, including the giant panda and the Sichuan takin.

Jiuzhaigou Valley is a mountainous area with series of lakes and waterfalls containing clear, mineral-rich water. It is located in China's Northern Sichuan Province, in the Min Shan mountain range.
The natural beauty of the site lies in the over 100 strange-coloured lakes and terraces. They are the result of karst erosion and deposits. Some of the lakes are swamps. Others contain large quantities of grass, underground rivers or a wealth of algae.
The landscape of Jiuzhaigou can be compared with Plitvice Lakes (Croatia) and Huanglong(China), though Jiuzhaigou's attractions are held in higher esteem than that of the other two. At its inscription in 1992, it was recommended that Jiuzhaigou and nearby Huanglong(also in the Min Shan) would be inscribed as one site.
